Chess is a mixed media artist living in south Bristol. Much of her work takes the form of ink and collage portraits, with paintings displayed and sold at galleries, restaurants, and hotels across the UK.
Recently, following a desire for more colour and more creative expression, Chess has been exploring the medium of oil painting and the subject of food. The bright colours and thick paint texture play into themes of guilty pleasure, temptation, and consumer culture, with her CDonuts tying all three together.
Regardless of what she is painting and the materials she is using, Chess enjoys the hands-on nature of creating art and its power to tell a story and inspire feeling. Her work asks viewers to reflect on the consumable everyday objects and imagery we often take for granted, finding meaning in the familiar. Whether through the decades-old newspaper backgrounds of her portrait work or the bold, unapologetic presence of her food paintings, Chess creates pieces that spark conversation and connect with people on both a visual and visceral level. She is continually experimenting with new techniques and subjects, driven by curiosity and a deep-seated love for the creative process itself.
