Kate Aughey’s mixed media collages are rooted in nostalgia with threads of connection laid between an ancient past and the present. Themes recur like echoes of childhood when folktales allowed us to make sense of an uncertain world. Kate is drawn to animals such as snakes whose symbolic duality represents both fear and death but are reimagined in her work as absurd. Birds recur as messengers but are frequently earth bound, subverting the expected. Kate loves the interplay between ease and discomfort and seeks to convey a sense of the uncanny through scenes which feel both familiar and strange.
