Dave’s artistic practice focuses on the juxtaposition between the man made and natural and the human experience of geometric forms, surfaces and materials. Paintings and collages often embody a built aesthetic and are strongly influenced by architecture and the built environment. Utilising and re-purposing found and discarded materials, particularly books (cloth covers, papers, cardboard, binding boards), the smaller-scale pieces on display at North Street Gallery focus on minimal composition, surface and colour. The work harks back to Dave’s previous career as a librarian and harnesses the subtle marks, age and history inherent in deconstructed objects that have been used and handled over many years.
