Julie Taylor is a printmaker based in Bristol, much of her work is done in her studio at home and in Spike Print Studio, using both screen print and cyanotype. After seeing Alexander Calder’s circus made out of wire wood and string she became interested in circus imagery and worked on a series of prints based on circus acts using cyanotype, a medium which naturally lends itself to creating a sense of nostalgia. She is drawn to the old and the new repurposing in many of her prints the Victorian ideal of using the bell jar as a way of presenting and protecting important objects. She has most recently been working on prints from found images of Victorian women, fragments from another era, where she has taken formal photos that may at first suggest restraint or repression and given them a new life allowing the women to endure, resist and rise – they are here to claim their place.
